My Favourite Animal…

Animal 1

  • I have a dark blue tongue where the colour helps to keep my tongue from being sunburnt.  My tongue is around 50 cm long and can twist and grip things such as picking out delicious leaves between thorns

  • I am the tallest land animal on Earth (taller than three men standing on each other’s shoulders)

  • I have a very long neck which helps to keep a lookout for predators

  • I eat up to 45 kg of leaves and twigs each day!

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a GIRAFFE

Animal 2

  • Is a bird of prey and hunts small animals at night

  • They have sharp claws but they’re still SUPER cute!

  • Their feathers are coloured to be a form of camouflage

  • Can turn their head almost all the way around (270 degrees around!)

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is an OWL

Animal 3

  • Is a reptile with bulgy eyes that move independently from each other

  • They flick out their tongue super quickly (up to 96 km per hour) to catch insects to eat

  • They change the colour of their skin depending on their mood but this speciality can also help to camouflage with their surroundings

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a CHAMELEON

Animal 4

  • Has a long ‘nose’ with bendy “fingers” at the end of it to grab the things they want

  • Is the biggest land animal and is a herbivore (only eats plants)

  • Have big ears and use them as fans to keep themselves cool

  • Has an average life span between 40 - 80 years but can live up to 100 years old!

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a ELEPHANT

Animal 5

  • Is the slowest mammal in the world - they move so slowly that algae often grows on their brown/grey fur

  • Can move their head 270 degrees so they can watch out for predators without having to move their bodies

  • Lives high up in the trees where they eat, sleep and hang off branches - often upside down from their toes with curved claws

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a SLOTH

Animal 6

  • Is a reptile who carries their ‘house’ on their back and can tuck their head in for protection

  • Their house (or shell) is part of their skeleton and grows as they grow

  • Lays eggs on land but spends most of their time in water

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a TURTLE

Animal 7

  • Has 8 eyes (although some only have six) AND eight legs

  • Is very helpful in keeping the

  • Is venomous to help them stun or kill their prey

  • Can spin seven types of different silk, each used for a different purpose - for example spinning webs or catching prey

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a SPIDER

Animal 8

  • Is the fastest land animal on earth reaching up to 130 km/h in short sprints

  • Has approximately 2000 spots which can be used to identify individuals based on their unique spots and patterns

  • Do not roar like other big cats like lions and tigers but have a voice box like the “small” cats whi!ch mean they actually meow!

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a CHEETAH

Animal 9

  • Is a semi-aquatic mammal with a large barrel shaped body, short stumpy legs and a huge head

  • They can open their mouths up to 150 degrees (around 1 metre wide)!

  • Its ok though as they are herbivores and can eat around 35 kg of their favourite plants (usually grass) in one night (that’s when they are most active)

  • Even though they are enormous, they are great swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes and can fold shut their ears and nostrils to keep the water out.

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a HIPPO

Animal 10

  • Is the largest animal to have ever lived on Earth - their tongue weighs as much as an elephant and their heart is the size of a car!

  • They live in the oceans and despite their huge size, they eat tiny shrimp like crustaceans called krill

  • They don’t have teeth but have a fibrous material used to filter food and sift through huge volumes of water to trap the krill through the baleen plates

  • A baby whale at birth is around 8 metres long and gain approximately 90 kg EACH DAY suckling on mum’s rich and fatty milk

  • That’s right - my favourite animal is a BLUE WHALE
